Meditation involves the relaxation of the mind and the body, so that these can be cleansed from a much deeper level
than is otherwise possible. During this state of relaxation, a person may feel strongly connected to another world,
perhaps developing clairvoyant and other similar abilities in the process. He may feel a certain level of elevation
than before and may be able to see things more clearly than he could have otherwise.
However, that is the ultimate level to which meditation can reach. It certainly helps to break down the overwhelming influence of
the intellect by stilling the thought process, thus enabling a person to develop greater self-control over the body. But
that is all that it can achieve, and therefore meditation only takes the spirit into the next immediate level in the
surrounding ethereal environment of man.
A connection to God, to the Creator Himself, is out of the question here, because the thought-process does not
extend that far, while it should be clear to all that meditation is primarily focussed on controlling the
thought-process. When a person meditates, he generally focusses his attention on concepts.
Even if he sets God as the object of his meditation, the thought-process does not suffice to reach the Maker.
Instead, only forms are created in the immediate ethereal world that can either strengthen or weaken the person
meditating, depending on his intentions.
Of course, if he makes God the object of his meditation, he might also delude himself into thinking that
by "meditating upon Him", he is actually connecting himself physically to Him, perhaps becoming even one
with Him. This belief is not correct, for the simple reason that man is a creature, a created being, whereas
God, the Creator, does not personally or physically dwell in His creatures. Consequently there is not a shred of
Divinity in man.
This wrong belief that God is everything and everything is God is the cause of so much that is
wrong today. It leads to a false sense of security and even to a certain level of arrogance, that man, with just
a little bit of effort through meditation along with various other psychic practices and abstemiousness can even
become God! Man is a creature, a work, whereas God is the Maker, the Creator. Is an engineer physically
joined to or one with the buildings he designs and constructs? Absolutely not! And in the same way, the Almighty God,
the Creator of the Universe is far beyond this Creation, where we dwell only at its lowest levels. Our thought-processes,
powerful as they are, cannot forge the link to the Godhead, even at the highest level of development of thought-control
through meditation and other similar practices.
On the other hand, if man bows down his head in genuine humility and shows deep reverence to his Maker, a reverence
that is intuitively felt, which comes from the heart, or to be precise, from the atman or life-force dwelling within him, then
a connection is formed with the Light, which is the Radiation of God, through which much strength and
power is bestowed upon him. This alone forms the way to God: pure and reverent worship of God, not regarding
Him as an idol to worship, but as much more, as the Eternal Living Source of Power, through which we all came
into existence!
